Job title: Quality Analyst - Classical (12 month Fixed Term Contract)
Reporting to: GC Lead
Location: Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk
Hours: 40 hours per week
The Opportunity
The objective of this role is to perform compositional analysis of flavour and fragrance raw materials that pass through the Quality Control laboratory. This encompasses the GC-FID analysis to assess acceptability of the profile and GC-MS analysis for the identification of unknowns, to ensure that any material that enters or leaves the site is fit for purpose. The role also involves instrumental performance checks and maintenance as well as supporting the sensory evaluation of products and general laboratory maintenance.

What you’ll be doing
The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:
GC-FID analysis of flavour and fragrance materials to determine if the product profile is acceptable.
GC-MS analysis to identify unknowns and determine plausibility in the product.
Chiral and FAME analysis of raw materials to determine authenticity.
Sample preparation for analysis.
Carrying out preventative and reactive maintenance on GC-FID systems, to include needle and inlet maintenance, column installation and trimming.
Performing weekly verification checks on FID systems to ensure they are fit for use.
Participate in organoleptic evaluation of the products, as necessary.
Preparation of tasting solutions and arrange for a representative number of individuals to carry out analysis.
When necessary, arrange for analytical samples to be sent for external analysis and collate the results.
As required undergo training to measure physical parameters of flavour and fragrance raw materials originating from various departments and external sources, which includes but is not exclusive to density, refractive index, optical rotation, melting points and flash points. Perform peroxide values, acid values, ester values and instrumental analysis including UV spectroscopy, IR, and liquid chromatography.
Prepare reagents to the required standard for routine and non-routine analysis.
Assist in sample receipt to the Quality Control laboratory when required in the to maintain workflow of sample analysis to the required areas of the department.
Carry out day to day laboratory checks and housekeeping tasks, these incudes washing up glass wear in the absence of supporting staff as well as put away clean glassware and emptying the wet bins at the end of each day.
Contribution to continuous improvement in the Quality Department (e.g. suggestions on improvements in efficiency, cost cutting, improvements in effectiveness of operations).
Follow any task and request linked to technical projects as requested by GC Lead.
General tasks within the department.
What we’re looking for
We are seeking a Quality Analyst – Classical with either a degree in a science-based discipline (ideally including chemistry modules) or relevant industry experience; prior procedural training is advantageous but not essential, as full training will be provided by Treatt.
